| Artist's Statement My work consists of oil painting on both wood and canvas as well as mixed media drawings and prints. For several years now I have been working in an abstract/figurative manner. The images displayed here are rooted in the landscape of my mind and as such are constructed as psychological meditations. Contemplative encounters with the physical, the spiritual, the conscious and the unconscious are presented as transcendent experiences of mystery and wonder. At times these experiences can be ambiguous in nature and as such reflective of a meditative process that is uncertain ... yet always at work and wondering. A harmony and a balance is sought in these works to help illustrate a sense of these encounters. It is my desire that narratives for these images be open to individual interpretive responses. My own meditations and musings in the studio have resulted in these images and yet I do not want to limit the experience for others when encountering my work. As a result, I do not title individual pieces. I consider the images to be separate pages out of the same book ... to be a series, if you will ... "a meditation series". When using oil paints I prefer to use stand oil as my medium and I do employ glazes for certain effects. Mixed media works can involve the use of photography, monotypes, pencils, pen & ink, craypas, oil pastels, pastels, chaulk, watercolor, colored pencils, etc. The color and black & white photography displayed here on my site consists of a wide range of subject matter. This work covers many years of utilizing the camera as a tool for framing compositions of interest in the natural world. From time to time, I will be adding additional photographic images to this website. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. (1971) and attended The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts where I received both a Diploma (1982) and a Fifth-Year Certificate for graduate studies (1983). I have exhibited my work in Massachusetts at The Boston Center for the Arts, The Basement Gallery, The Bently College Gallery, The Walnut Hill School for the Arts and The Loker Gallery/Arts Wayland. I have also exhibited in Washington, D.C. at The Foundry Gallery and in New York, New York at The Helio Galleries. I hope that you will take the time to scroll through the Images Pages here on my site. If you are interested in contacting me with questions or comments, simply e-mail jpstudio1@earthlink.net from my "contact me" page. Whether you are an interested collector, an artist or a dealer, I would be happy to discuss my work with you. If you would like, I can also arrange for a studio visit.
